The tremendous increase in the population and the industrial growth brought about a proportionate increase in the number of motor vehicles and consequently a rise in road accidents.

To overcome this, the idea of training children to help their schoolmates to cross safely outside their institutions mooted and a squad of boys from the Bharda New High School (Mumbai) was selected in 1951 and given regular training, training in traffic control. The efficient manner in which these boys performed their duties evoked appreciation from the press and then public. Thus was born the School Safety Cadets to be later known as the Road Safety Patrol in 1957.
